Barista, in training

Greg’s association with coffee started when he was a young boy in Aberdeen, grinding coffee beans for his parents’ dinner parties in the 1970s! At about the same time, I was turning up my nose to the milky instant coffee that was on offer at home, preferring tea instead.

And that was how it was until we met and it became Greg’s mission to convert me to coffee. It didn’t take long; I was soon hooked on the single shots of espresso he made using his little Gaggia coffee machine and ground Kimbo coffee from Naples. It wasn’t just the coffee that won me over; it was the artistry and pride in making it that was also part of the appeal.

I’ve watched Greg making coffee for many years now. On the odd occasion, I’ve been known to have a go too; but only if he’s not there to do it himself. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that Greg has a real passion for it!

The idea to have the Espresso Hub in the hostel was his. Most mornings, once he’s used his barista skills to make his cappuccino and my espresso, he can be found by the coffee machine downstairs enticing our guests to a freshly made cup of genuine Italian coffee! And, if our reviews are anything to go by, it’s a hit.

After our first season, we’ve decided the time is right for me to learn the ropes and help out with the Espresso Hub! I’m excited that I’m going to be a barista but I know I have a lot to live up to. My training begins in earnest soon. I will be Daniel to Greg’s Mr Miyagi and I’m sure there’ll be some “wax on, wax off” moments before I am ready to be let loose on our guests! Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see my efforts.

So, having decided I want a piece of the coffee action, here’s hoping I’ve got the right stuff!
