Sunset on summer

There’s no denying that summer is over.  It seems like barely any time since we were writing about midsummer but autumn has crept up on us.  All the tell tale signs are there: less daylight; the leaves on the trees are turning orange and falling to the ground; the heating is on; there are fewer guests, especially from overseas.

The end of summer also means that we’ve made it through our first peak season! You may remember that we swapped office jobs to become hostel owners so the first few months were always going to be hard work as we learned on the job.  So, what do we know now that we didn’t then?

  • We can do this.
  • You don’t get much time off during the summer, so you have to grab it and make the most of it.
  • The Great Glen is a really, really popular and busy place.
  • Most things take at least twice as long as you think or would like them to take.
  • Duvet covers should be inside out to get them back on quickly.
  • We like our new hostel cats and they seem to like us.
  • Greg loves being the hostel barista.
  • Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
  • We know a lot more about septic tanks, drains and plumbing, but not enough yet.
  • Our guests make it worthwhile, so we’d like to say thanks to everyone who has stayed with us, particularly those who have come back for more.
  • And finally, we don’t regret our decision to quit our jobs and buy a hostel.

We are open year round. But over the autumn and winter we hope to catch up on some sleep, get out and about climbing mountains and riding our bikes, go to the cinema and recharge our batteries ready for next summer.
