Hiking the Great Glen Way

The Great Glen Way is one of Scotland’s long distance walks. As its name suggests the route follows the Great Glen for around 120km between Fort William and Inverness. We receive our fair share of guests hiking the Great Glen Way usually heading north from Fort William. They reach us after a long first day or at the end of day 2 before continuing on their way to Fort Augustus and beyond.

Since moving to Saddle Mountain Hostel we have become regular users of the Great Glen Way in our vicinity. It would be hard not to as the main path goes close to Invergarry and a variant, the Invergarry Link, runs right past our front door!

We pride ourselves on being able to provide tourist information based on personal experience so we’ve been filling in the gaps in our Great Glen Way CV, slowly but surely, as time has permitted. Our approach to walking the Great Glen Way has been less conventional and certainly less linear than you’ll find in the guidebooks!

We’ve walked some sections many times. We’ve hiked some stages there and back. We’ve combined sections of the high and low routes making a circuit. We’ve made use of the local buses to drop us at the end of a stage and walked back. We’re pleased to say that we have now finished the Great Glen Way in style with a challenging hike along an unexpectedly snowy trail from Inverness to Drumnadrochit.

If you don’t want to walk the whole Great Glen Way there are still plenty of ways to enjoy it on some lovely day walks. Why not try the circuit of Loch Oich on the main Great Glen Way and the Invergarry Link which can be done from our front door? Or you could try our favourite, hiking the low route from Fort Augustus to Invermoriston and return on the high route. The stunning views of the Loch Lochy mountains and Ben Nevis to the south are worth the climb.

Now we’re finished, we’re not hanging up our Great Glen Way boots, far from it. We’ll be out on the local sections right through the peak season. If you’re walking the route we might even see you as you make your way to the hostel!
