Where the smurf are we?

It was another busy summer which was fantastic but it certainly left us in need of some time off from running the hostel, plus a bit of sunshine!

For those who know us, you’ll know that our holidays are rarely without activity. This one was no exception as we took our bikes across to Spain and spent a week cycling in Andalucia. We were staying in Ronda, one of the region’s white towns, and a place that everyone we mentioned the trip to had already visited. It was certainly a dramatic setting and a great base to explore the other white hill towns and mountain passes from. There was not much cycling on the flat!

One of the more bizarre places we pedalled to was Júzcar, aka the Pueblo Pitufo (or Smurf Town in English)! The whole town is painted smurf blue, not the usual white of the other villages in the area. And, to add to the surreal experience, there are giant smurf statues and smurf paintings adorning the houses. It’s all tied in with the Smurf films and the villagers voted to keep their houses blue rather than returning to white. Apparently it’s been good for business with the influx of people visiting. Well, we visited twice!!

Just in case you think we’ve totally smurfin’ lost it after 5 months without a day off, we also did some more conventional, non blue-themed riding, cycling over some of the main mountain road passes. Not long after we reached the top of the Pass of the Doves we watched a pro-cyclist from the Spanish Movistar team riding up the road as if he was on a motorbike. Even Greg will need a bit more training to compete with that!

As you may know, we’re carrying out some major improvements to the hostel at the moment.  Arriving back home after our trip away we were excited to discover the foundations for our new drying room had been laid! Since we’ve got back the walls have gone up and scaffolding is being erected for the roof as we write.

We are moving into our off-peak season so we ask that you let us know you are coming at least a day in advance. We will also be closed on Tuesdays between November and Easter 2017. Finally, as the building works continue we are sorry but there may be times when we have to close the hostel. You can check our up-to-date availability on our online booking system or give us a call.
