A welcome pause
By nature I’m a person in a hurry. Rushing headlong from one thing to the next is what I do. But every once in a while I just need to slow down and take a break. At this time of year the weather often brings about this change. High temperatures and humidity are not my friends.
During a recent hot spell when Greg suggested going for a picnic and finding a pool for some wild swimming it seemed like too good an opportunity to turn down. Off we went – hostel cleaning finished, sandwiches made, sun cream applied – knowing we had a few hours before we needed to be back!
It was a long shot that we’d have the picnic place to ourselves given it’s a relatively well known spot but luck was on our side. Sitting on warm rocks with our feet dangling in the running water, listening to the sound of the river cascading down around us, it was the perfect spot for our picnic.
After lunch we headed upstream on the lookout for a more secluded pool that was just right for a dip. Scrambling from one bank to the other, over rocks and fallen trees we found it, a large pool, dappled by sunlight. Little by little we lowered our bodies into the cool water, adjusting to the temperature until we were under and able to swim.
Our wonderful afternoon was summed up by a small leaf I noticed on the way back that appeared to be suspended in mid-air. It was as if someone had pressed pause on its descent from the tree. I felt like that leaf, enjoying the chance to just be still and unwind before heading home to my usual routine!
